Setting Intentions, Not Resolutions: Creating a 2020 Vision Board

by Wendy Carter

We all know the drill this time of year: we promise ourselves to exercise more, save more money, or lose weight. But let’s be honest, most resolutions don’t work because they are typically about what you think you should do and lack a foundation of meaning and personal relevance. Another option is to start the year with intention and create a vision board.

A vision board is a visualization tool with words and pictures that represent goals, dreams, and how we want to feel. By placing visual representation of what you want your life to look like into one space, you can visualize them. I created my first vision board last January when I was invited to a vision board making party at my office. Before the event, I sat down and asked myself what I really wanted in my life which catapulted me into some deep thinking and praying. From this I was able to get more clarity and vision for the future. I sat there one evening ripping out pictures from magazines and chatting with my colleagues humming along to music tunes. I cut out the words “serve” and “grateful” to keep me focused on serving my community, family, and clients and staying grateful for everything in my life. I glued pictures of Cabo San Lucas, my family, and healthy meals to remind me of my “why” and my wellness. I also cut out the words “leverage video” and “Just Do It””. When the board was done, I went home and pinned it to the bulletin board in my laundry room.

With a family of five, the laundry room is visited more often then I’d like but throughout the year I would glance at the vision board and be reminded of my intentions and amazed at the things were being manifested into my life. I took the Mexican vacation, had more quality time with family, served more real estate clients than ever before, and produced over 40 videos educating people on real estate and the community. Most everything on my board came into my life!  For the things that were not accomplished like eating healthier, they will make it on my vision board for 2020.

When you surround yourself with images of how you want to feel, who you want to become, what you want to have, or where you want to live or vacation, your life changes to match those images and those desires. Your intention is that powerful.

To help other women make this same discovery I organized a Vision Board Party this month for women in my community. We had so much fun and were inspired by each other. The vision boards were different, creative, and beautiful and represented the beauty and uniqueness of each woman who was there. If you haven’t made one yourself this year I encourage you to just do it! 2020 here we come!
